My printer is an older model and I could easily just buy a cheap new printer every time I needed to replace the ink cartridges. The reason I don't is because my printer is on a shelf in a cabinet and for this to work I need something small with a front loading paper tray. Most of the ones today load from the back and/or are too big for my space. While I'd love to have and all in one or something fancy, I'm more concerned with not having to put the printer out in the open.
I usually get my ink online because the stores don't carry stock for it anymore. Luckily I don't use much ink like I did when I had a couple kids living here and going to school.

They kind of high compared to other with new non OEM cartridges. I get great cartridges at half that amd twice as many on amazon.
I tried refilling ink cartridges (for an ink jet) at Office Depot/Max and purchasing refurbished cartridges from inks-4-less.
The refillable ink produced poor quality text and not many pages. My inkjet, Epson workforce 610, didn't respond well to the refurbished ink. The cartridges did not pass the maintenance function. I called Ink 4 Less. They were helpful, but felt their cartridges didn't work well with the Epson. They were fine in that they refunded my money. They were quite cheap. are there knock off companies with quality ink. Im looking for an Epson discount currently although I am out of spare black and cyan cartridges. Is there another option, a good knock off for instance. BTW, my computer wont print unless I have some cyan, magenta and yellow even though I rarely use color. The printer is 4 years old so I do not buy print in bulk!!!!

In regards to the cost of printer ink, the printer actually matters. Many of the cheapest printers have the most expensive inks. The new HP Officejets, while costing a bit more upfront, are extremely economical in comparison.

OEM cartridges are those made by the manufacture for their printers.
Compatible cartridges are those manufactured to OEM standards by someone besides the original manufacture. Most are identical in every way, although quality can vary. These are the ones with new chips to make your printer recognize them the same as any brand new cartridge. The ink inside is usually the same as OEM ink. Think of these as new aftermarket car parts.
Re-manufactured Cartridges are used cartridges that have been taken apart and rebuilt to OEM standards. Their quality depends on who is doing the re-manufacturing. Damaged or worn parts are replaced. The ink quality may be similar to OEM but you never know until you use it. Not all re-manufacture cartridges can get the chip to reset or even have a new chip. Think of these as a fully rebuilt auto part.
Refilled cartridges just had the outside wiped down and ink injected into the reservoir, Usually nothing else is done. The ink quality varies by the vendor. This is just refiling the gas tank.
Everyone should make sure they are aware of what type of cartridge they are buying. A refilled cartridge may be horrible but that same company's compatible cartridges may be outstanding.

Your comments support what I was saying about Carrot Ink; they have excellent compatible cartridges and their customer service is great. They persevere until you are satisfied!
And yes, they are not the least expensive company out there, but their prices are substantially lower than OEM ink, which, by the way, one can buy from them, if one persists in paying more than is really needed.
And, I'll say again; no connection with the company, I'm just a very satisfied customer.
You can have your cartridge refiled. I think Walgreens used to offer refilled for like $15. Always consider cartridge costs when you buy a new printer, a printer can cost $50, but cartilages $100.
