Hi all.
I have a Nikon digital camera and i have to install the software.
I've been putting it off for months 'cause i'm a techno-goober and i'm techno-phobic.
I'm finally ready to give it a go but already i'm in need of advice.
The question i have at this point is:
The directions say, "Before installing turn off any virus-checking software".
I have Norton anti-virus and i have no idea how to turn it off.
Also, i use Firefox and isn't there anti-virus stuff on there too? ... as well as on Windows? (Vista)
Any help with this will be appreciated.

You don't have to install the software that came with your digital camera. You should only install if if you need the function that the camera software provides, and you don't already have something better installed. For instance, I do most of my work in Photoshop Elements 8, so I just use Photoshop Elements 8's organizer to import and organize images from my camera or card reader. I never installed any of the software that came with my Nikon D90, in fact, I never even looked at the CD.
I have been ignoring the "turn off antivirus software" instructions for years with no problems. I suggest doing the same.
For the future - I suggest buying a USB memory card reader. Then just load the photos directly instead of using the cable. I think that is faster and doesn't require any software.

Agreed, 100%.
I couldn't find the cables from Kodak if my life depended on it. And there is no reason to load software. Windows can do it, along with a little editing.
Oh dear ... now i'm even more confused but i will process the information from your replies and will most likely come back with more questions.

Your camera stores pictures on a memory card about the size of a stamp.
If you have a memory card reader - you just pop the card out of your camera and stick it in the card reader. Your camera just treats the memory card as storage. Copy the files wherever you want to ("My Pictures" for example).

Look at that page and download:

and
[SIZE=2] FastStone Photo Resizer 2.9 Freeware (Last Update: 2009-11-27)[/SIZE]
Use the image viewer as your *Photo Album*,
and use Photo Resizer to re-size them when you need to make them smaller for whatever reason.
Image Viewer will also keep and display any movies you might have made with your Nikon.
LBNL, the suggestion to put them in (My Pictures) is a very good place to put them.
You probably don't even need a card reader with a lot of cameras. All of my Nikon DSLRs and P&S cameras have USB ports, and appear as removable storage devices when connected to my PC.

What people are saying is that you don't need to install the Nikon software to transfer photos from your camera to the computer.
Try this:
1. plug camera into computer.
2. follow on-screen prompts from Windows (or Mac) to transfer the photos.
