After the tragic accident on 91 yesterday that killed a 22-year veteran of the state police, I just wanted to post to remind people that when you see an emergency vehicle on the side of the road with lights flashing, you're required to move over and decrease your speed by 20 miles per hour. People don't realize how their cars veer toward whatever they're eyes are focused on.

That law IMO needs to be on a few billboards.

This is going to be a very difficult law to enforce, because most people just don't know about it.

It just came into effect last year (Sept 2009). I agree that they need to get the word out. I cringe on the highway when I see how close cars come to a police car or tow truck.

That said, even if people don't know about the law, it's simply common sense.

Actually, the law is written that moving over should only be done if it's safe for you to do so. For all intents and purposes, it's impossible to do it safely during my commute on the Merritt.

They have signs for it as soon as you enter Massachusetts on most major roadways. When it was enacted in Rhode Island, they had it posted on large overhead electronic signs for months.

The law exists, people just don't care.

Right, but also in the law states that if you can't move over, you must decrease your speed by 20mph (under the posted speed limit).

The law doesn't specify a specific speed reduction #. It should IMHO, but it doesn't.

AN ACT ESTABLISHING A "MOVE OVER" LAW IN CONNECTICUT.

Vance stated that drivers must decrease to 20mph under the limit. I don't see it in writing anywhere though, as you pointed out.

FWIW, it's a $92 fine if you receive a ticket for this offense.

OT: Paul Vance used to chase me and friends around in Prospect as a teenager causing mischief - he was our resident State Trooper. LOL In the end, he's a decent guy.
