Trying to understand CT use tax. I was working on my tax(first time resident filing here in CT) and on the state return they are asking about use tax. If I bought a book from amazon or a game from New egg(internet sites) do I have to claim each one of those purchases on my state taxes? Can someone explain how this "use tax" works. I have bought several items over the internet and not sure if I still have every receipt??
Thanks any help is appreciated

Use tax is a dumb name for sales tax, they say use so they can nab the money on items bought online & used here. If you bought from bigger sites, they have tax reciprocity with CT, and have collected the tax for the item already; you do not need to pay the tax twice. Smaller sites do not do this, you should guesstimate how much you spent, and figure the 6% sales tax. If you didn't keep the packing slips, you can try to look through old emails for order confirmations. Or you can just guesstimate $100= $6bucks. Either way it really isn't a big deal. Don't stress.

Personally I wouldn't worry about it at all. The state steals enough of our money already. Why pay tax on things that cost the state nothing & are not even sold by businesses here?

If they want it that bad, let them figure it out. The concept is rediculous.

I can't imagine anyone who is going to declare their "use tax" truthfully. It is close to unenforceable for the IRS to penalize you. The only cost effective way for the IRS to hit you is finding major non-conformance in your tax declaration and hit you as a total package. I haven't heard a single case of someone getting penalized for use tax violations only. How much can the IRS get out of use tax? $50?

Then again, I never had to deal with IRS so don't hold me to my words.
