It is true that the greater Stamford area is among the most expensive in the country. where you choose to live will most likely depend on your budget, what you expect to get for that budget, how far from Stamford your husband is willing to commute from and what type of community (urban, suburban, rural) you want to live in.

Stamford itself is a small city. It has a number of very nice areas with all types of homes ranging from apartments in towering buildings to large homes on multi-acre lots. Stamford has extensive amentiies (shopping, entertainment, recreation, etc.) but as a city it has some of the urban issues you would normally find (crime, poorer performing schools, etc.).

Immediately adjacent to Stamford are the suburban towns of Greenwich, Darien and New Canaan. These are beautiful very upscale communities with a lot of amenities and excellent schools. They are also very expensive. $1 million will only buy you a very modest home in these communities.

If your budget does not allow you to live near Stamford, you then need to consider some of the towns further away. Commuting into Stamford by car is difficult so I generally recommend to consider town that allow you to use the Metro North commuter rail along the coast or the Metro North Danbury line. This opens up many other towns like Westport, Fairfield, wilton, Ridgefield, Redding and Bethel to you. All are nice and have varying degree of price ranges. Keep in mind though that housing prices in even these towns will rival the pricer areas of Houston so expect to pay more. Jay

Budget? In Stamford and the surrounding areas, a 3BR SFH with a small property can cost between $500,000-$1,000,000. It's very expensive.

For what you paid in Houston, you will most definitely be priced out of that area.

I recommend Stratford or Milford. Still a bit more expensive than Houston, but doable and it's a short commute by train. Whatever you do I recommend being on the main New Haven train line and not the Danbury line as it's slow, infrequent and less reliable.

Is there a large differential between salaries? It might not make financial sense to move to Stamford just because he received a job. Comes down to the price range of your house here...

The housing/cost of living in CT is much higher than Houston - and unless your husband is making six figures - it will be hard to afford a reasonable place, with backyard etc that you are accustomed to without living at least 30-45 minutes away. The scenery here is amazing but just make sure you can afford the price tag that accompanies it before you give up your warm winters.

I make that and I could only afford Milford. MAYBE Norwalk if I really pushed it, or Fairfield if I wanted a tiny place.
