We want to find a progressive town with a health food store, farmers market, hiking, lakes, etc. We are outdoor people and want a home with acreage, but also want to be able to drive into town to have a sense of community, and still be within driving of Danbury. I am currently in FL and from upstate NY, so I know of the area, but not enough details to pick a town. We work from home so don't need to commute. Thank you!!

Just curious why you need to be close to Danbury if you're working from home?

Also, what's your budget?

You could look in New Milford, just to the north of Danbury which has both a farmer's market ( seasonal ) and a health food store. It also has large Candlewood Lake with plenty of boating, hiking etc.

Not knowing your budget or what you mean by acreage ( 1-2 acres, 10 acres? ) hard to know if you could find something suitable there.

.

Go to any web browser and input

MLS # F987024

MLS # L143267

One is a big colonial, one a raised ranch with finished lower level. Both on 6 or 7 acres, both in your price range.

New Preston! My fave l'il town. OK, I'll back down. But I liked it a lot. It's a different lifestyle than Danbury.

It's great for crunchy folk who like the upscale rural feel. Although I think a lot of the would-be upscale has gone downscale in this recession.

Just check it out. IMHO. you may be glad you did. At least provides another benchmark.

Best to you.

New Preston is beautiful. It fits the bill in most cases for what you're after although the shopping is very minimal and very upscale. There's not much in the way of basic shopping needs.

This website has some information on the shopping there.
New Preston, CT 06777 -- Small Village, Big Shopping

You may have trouble finding something you want in your price range but that's mostly because there are so few options to begin with. Anywhere on the lake itself will be ludicrously expensive (millions) but I'm sure nearby is doable. Technically it is part of Washington so don't be alarmed if you see that town name in your MLS searches.

The area called Marble Dale is adjacent to the lake area but is cheaper. The place names can get confusing so you may want to keep a google maps page up and enter the addresses to see how close to the area your choices are.

New Milford could be a good choice. You may also want to look into the Woodbury/Southbury/Oxford area. Really nice, woodsy, and Woodbury has a great health food store (New Morning) and a quaint arts/antiques scene.

Bethel is worth considering too, although it may be a challenge to get the acreage you're looking for. The plusses are one of the biggest and best parks in the state for hiking/biking/etc. (Huntington State Park) and a very charming town center.

If looking at New Preston, you could also consider nearby Morris, Warren, Kent. Shopping is very limited, but not too terrible of a drive to New Milford and Danbury.
