We have a lit up bug zapper hanging in our tree for night time and it does a really good job. We also hang fly catching bags from our trees and need to replace them weekly that they get so full. Yet we never notice too many flies.

So those things do help. We have also sprayed our yard for bugs before too.

I hate outside and I hate the bugs. But born and raised in CT, they are NOT a big deal. They are worse north in Maine.
Anyway:
1. Buy bugspray, the OFF kind unless you have something against DEET.
2. Buy the bug wipes...you wipe on your skin instead of spray, can work better.
3. If you are entertaining, keep these things on the table outside with you.
4. Buy "fogger". You spray an area and they won't come there for a few hours. Keep it outside with you, you may or may not have to re spray.
5. Buy citronella candles and put 2 on a table,...entertain around the table with bugspray on and you should be okay.
6. You can also buy tiki torches and put them around the area in a circle/square/rectangle.
It's not as big deal of it seems.
7. If you go hiking, check each other carefully for ticks after... esp in your hair/head.
8. Hang up an electric bug zapper in the area.

Also I have never gotten a tick and I have even gone hiking in the woods without bugspray on. While I wouldn't recommend that, ticks won't really attack you everyday.

I do the anti-mosquito tiki torches and they seem to work.
