Hello everyone,

Moving to CT next week and we have been given 2 options by our property manager for cable, internet and phone: Optimum and AT&T U-verse. What would you recommmend (speed, price, customer service)? Your advice is appreciated.

Uverse for customer service and a much better set top box.

Optimum for pure Internet speed.

Depends on your needs.

I have uverse internet and have been very happy with it so far. Uverse television is still is not available in my immediate neighborhood (we have underground utilities, and apparently AT&T can't serve us yet), and so I can't personally comment. Others in my town (where there's above ground utility poles) have uverse television, and a number of those friends have been far less than satisfied. This definitely bums me out because I've been itching to drop Charter cable once and for all. Most awful company in my opinion... Hopefully uverse television just has some bugs to work through in my area and that it will eventually become a comparable alternative to cable tv.

My Uverse was much better than Charter in every way. Not sure what their issue is with it.

Charter has some of the worst customer service in existence!

Ha! I bet I have you beat with my Charter "experience." Picture it: summer 2008. Hot July night and a thunderstorm rolls through. Our backyard took a direct strike by lightening. It actually hit a tree, and then the bolt branched out (you could actually see the damage it did to the lawn -- blown up tufts of grass everywhere in a crazy branch-like pattern!). Big deal for us, but not completely out of the realm of possibilities. Anyway like I mentioned above, we have underground utilities, so the strike wound up taking out our telephone & internet, our cable, and our well pump also (it actually blew the well outlet off the wall in our basement and knocked shelves and candles off the wall on our first floor -- we were very lucky that the house didn't burn to the ground!) anyway, AT&T came to the house the next day to get our phones back up and running. Well Pump guys came out two days later too. Charter Communications got our television back up and running, wait for it.......(hold your breath and onto your hat.......) ............... in November!!!!!! We had television back just in time for Thanksgiving. Four months with no television! I still HATE that company till no end -- even 6 years later! I will never (ever) get over that! LOL! Can't wait to drop them!!
Friends in town issues w/ u-verse = unreliable service and issues with the technicians not being able to correct the problem. Most wound up switching back to Charter, except one who has had a good experience. I'm hoping by the time it becomes available to me, all bugs will have been worked out and that it will be a non-eventful conversion.

They double billed me for 6 months, and I caught it when I was moving. It took several visits to the Newtown office (useless and slow) and several agonizingly long phone calls with several different reps that were all clueless before I wound up posting to Twitter and Facebook about how completely awful my experience was. They refunded it real quickly after that!

I never had any Uverse issues but my parents (who are in your area) did in the very beginning about 3 years ago. It's fine now.

Despite Dolan's total mismanagement of the Knicks, I have retained my Optimum triple play for over twenty years in Westchester and lower Fairfield Cty. In all that time I've probably experienced no more than five problems and they were handled immediately by repairmen or on the line.

I find their telephone support professional, courteous, and swift. The speed of the Internet is one of the best in the Northeast, and they provide 4 different tiers to suit your budget and requirments.

Optimums News 12 Connecticut is important to us in SW Ct since Hartford and New Haven stations provide scant coverage of our local news. And in stormy weather, the service is a godsend, with their 24 hour traffic and weather broadcasts, (including traffic cameras.)

Optimum has legions of critics. I am not one of them.

Uverse tv has a few more bells and whistles (e.g. whole house dvr), but their internet speeds are ususally slower than Optimum, and can be snail like if you are any distance from the node where their optic line transfers signal to your and your neighbors copper lines. At the most expensive tier, they offer more HD channels than Optimum and a better signup deal, though I'll bet you can get Optimum to match.

I love my Uverse. I haven't had an issue with internet speed at all--but I also pay a little more for a faster connection. I did get a great sign up deal--I plan on taking them when I move, instead of dealing with Optimum. My parents hated Optimum. I'm currently in a Uverse/Comcast area....Comcast is horrible.
