In a few weeks I will potentially be getting a job in NY (just waiting for the formal offer). With NYC being so expensive and overcrowded, some friends suggested living in Connecticut and commuting to NY. I have two questions: What cities are closest to NYC? Which cities are commuter friendly (i.e., bus service to train station without need to use car everyday, apartments close to bus and train services, etc.)?

Budget and tolerance for travel time? CT is less expensive than NY, but still expensive especially the closer you are to NYC. Without knowing budget, travel tolerance or need for schools my first suggestion is Stamford. Accessible train service, vibrant City and plenty of apartments to choose from.

You should look into Westchester county slightly above NYC too. If you are renting and/or don't have to worry about schools, I really recommend White Plains, Hartsdale, Mamaroneck, and Larchmont in that order. The commute doesn't get much shorter than that - White Plains has a ton of express trains around the clock to Grand Central that get you there in about 35 mins. The area around the train station is very walkable and is probably the most doable without requiring a car. I walked for all my errands, only using my car for fun outings. It's pretty comparable to Stamford but I believe slightly more walkable if you live in "downtown" WP. I listed Larchmont last though it is the most desirable of the towns because there aren't as many rentals around the station --but still some-- and it will be less exciting if you are in your 20s or early 30s. If you have a family and need schools though it would be most ideal for that.

Stamford, Norwalk, and Darien. Anything within the CT's panhandle is reasonable. The only issue is traffic and many people I know take the train.

Norwalk is becoming the new Stamford I feel, especially with the new mall in development. I could see a lot of money coming in to revamp the South Norwalk train station to take some pressure off Stamford.
