Next month, I'll be flying out of LaGuardia at 9:00 PM on a Friday evening. Given the traffic that our state is notorious for, how early would you suggest I get on the road? I'm in the New Haven area.

The downside here is, I'll be working that day so I don't have the luxury to go whenever I'd like. But I don't want to take any chances either.

It's reverse traffic. It won't be that bad. You might hit some in New Haven, and Stamford/Greenwich, and possibly a little more in Queens. Those are the typical choke spots in reverse traffic.

I would leave at 5:30PM, personally. Earlier if you're north or east of New Haven, like 5PM. You'll probably get there early but better to be safe.

I would not be as worried about Connecticut traffic as the traffic you will face at the bridges crossing from the Bronx into Queens. You would take the Whitestone Bridge to cross since it is closer to LaGuardia and traffic can back up at the tolls there. Just leave yourself as much time as possible. Jay

I wouldn't drive. I'd hire a limo and ask them what time I need to be ready for them to pick me up.

5/5:30 - If you are leaving from Central CT.
It wont be that bad.
I drive to JFK all the time, leave the car on long term parking, allot cheaper than hiring a limo/car service.

If you are alone and have minimal luggage (let's say one suitcase + one carry on) I would consider metro north + bus.

Take metro north to 125th st harlem (last stop BEFORE grand central) then switch to the M60 bus which goes to all terminals at LGA. Train ride is probably 90-100 minutes and bus is 45-60 minutes.

When you come back do the same in reverse.

That's 2.5 hours for a trip that only takes around 1.5 hours by car (notwithstanding rush hour traffic). I would never consider that.

Enjoy paying $18 a day for parking at LGA then.

Uber actually makes decent financial sense when you factor in long term parking.

Either way I'd happily pay the premium over schlepping luggage for hours and hours on public transportation.
