Only know a little of Putnam, which is near by. There's a grocery store (Price Chopper), Thai Place (Good restaurant from what I hear), Sharpe Hill Vineyard is amazing, and Hartford bought out Day Kimball Hospital (Not sure if still has that special birthing status), a petting zoo on the bordering State of Mass or RI, and that's all I know ha.
Cousin lives in Putnam next door. It's pretty out there and is not very close to anything CT. Your better off taking day trips to RI or Boston even, 395 is your main highway or a haul to 84 to get down to the rest of the state. For me it's almost a 2 hour drive from the New Haven area.
Surprisingly a number of my coworkers live in Woodstock and they like it. It is a small quiet town that does not have a lot of amenities but people living there drive to neighboring communities (mostly Putnam) for services, store and restaurants not in Woodstock itself. Jay
Woodstock itself does not have much, I think I had a pizza at a little place in town once. Putnam would have most of what you need or ride further down 395 to Dayville and Brooklyn. Other then that Your headed towards Providence Worcester or Manchester, all of which really aren't that far in the grand scheme of things.
It is a very pretty little town , in one of the few areas of CT that still feels like old rural New England.
i live just outside Woodstock. it has great schools but it is a farm town with houses far and few between. there is a few miles between gas stations or anything else for that matter. the up side is that it is relatively close to Sturbridge, MA and Southbridge, MA which both are abundant in things to do. woodstock is a bit far from, say, a walmart or target. the town itself is very beautiful and quiet. their fair is the best one in my opinion during labor day weekend.
