Hi there. I’m planning to move back to CT from CA, as CA public schools just don’t have the resources to serve my two daughters with special needs. My 5th grader has dyslexia, speech and language delays and some other issues that make learning hard (not trying to be mysterious, just trying to keep this short). My 3rd grader has a subtle presentation of autism spectrum disorder. I know Essex Elementary is great, so that is high on my consideration list. I graduated from Hand High in Madison, but while their schools are great for neurotypical and high-achieving kids, I hear their SPED services are lacking. Is there any first-hand knowledge out there about SPED services in Guilford, Clinton, Westbrook, Old Saybrook or Branford? Also open to Old Lyme, Mystic areas. Thanks in advance!
I know nothing about special ed services in any shoreline towns, but I would recommend first looking at the bigger towns as they're more likely to have a bigger array of services.
That said, Essex is a smaller town and you said they're great, so start there. (I don't think they regionalize with Deep River and Chester until Middle School?)
Try East Lyme as well, as it's a bigger school system than Old Lyme/Lyme (they also have kids from Salem for high school)
Hi, I would also be interested in hearing what you find. I am working in CT now and considering moving my family here. I have a son in 5th grade who will be entering middle school in the fall who has been diagnosed with dyslexia and dysgraphia. I have toured some of the private schools for language based learning disabilities in CT but I’m interested in hearing about what Public schools have superiors support services.

It helps to know where in Connecticut you are working. We cannot direct you to towns without that. Jay
Our family will be relocating to CT from Boston. I will be working at Yale and I have a high functioning 5 year old who is currently receiving special education in Boston and will be starting 1st grade from September 2020.
I would like to prioritize my son's education. I'm looking at Madison, Guilford, Trumbull and Fairfield- in fact any other place that offers good special education services and is commutable from Yale. Also a bit of diversity would be great.

Please let me know what are the options?
As I’m sure you can tell from the demographics, Madison and Guilford aren’t very racially diverse, but diversity means different things to different people. Race/ethnicity? Socioeconomic? All of the above?
Since you’re working in New Haven, I’d start with Branford and maybe branch out to Milford if you can’t find what you need. Schools perform slightly above average for CT.
I can’t speak firsthand about special ed services in any of the communities but maybe someone who has firsthand knowledge of it can.
A lot of Yale people live in Guilford and Madison. They are beautiful towns with great schools. I would also consider Orange, Woodbridge and Bethany which feed into the Amity School District. It’s very well regarded. Those towns are closer to New Haven so they may work better for you. Milford and Branford are good options too. Good luck, Jay
Sorry I neglected to say where I’m working. I’m working in Guilford CT. My wife would like to keep her job in Manhattan at least for a year or so. So that puts us looking at places where I can drive north on 95 to work and she can train down. We have toured Eagle Hill in Greenwich and Southport school as they specialize in language based learning difficulties. But I have no idea how we would pay for those as they are around 70k a year. Thanks all for your help and advice.
Towns commutable to Guilford by and NYC by train would put you at Fairfield, which is a good starting point. The commute to NYC could be 1.5-2 hours each way though, depending on where in the city employment is. The commute to Guilford will be about 45 minutes by car without traffic.
That’s not an easy situation. Both commutes will be tough.
