Anything around the Middletown area, like the Haddams, Chester, etc. These were already mentioned. You get the college town vibe from Wesleyan in Middletown plus the gorgeousness of the surrounding towns. You get the great Connecticut River, you get to be not that far from the ocean. The Goodspeed Opera House is amazing and has broadway type shows. Pretty quiet, historic, that area has a lot to offer. Middletown has a walkable downtown that you'd probably love. One thing, coming from CA, do NOT get electric heat! Our heating bills are something to consider so get a well insulated house and never, ever get electric heat. CT electric rates are the highest in the USA anyway.

It's something I came up with on the fly.
The "ford" refers to a collection of CT towns or cities that end with the letters or word "ford".
Examples would be Milford and Branford. They are very affordable compared to CA and other expensive areas.

Research Mystic, CT, near the Rhode Island border, the shops in town are adorable, low crime, very touristy, and you can enjoy the Atlantic Ocean beaches of Rhode Island. I don't know about real estate prices or schools, but I vacationed there often. The two big Indian casinos are a short drive with many restaurants, free entertainment, outlet malls, etc. The rest of CT is boring.

That was going to be my suggestion as well, or possibly Stonington (Mystic or Pawcatuck) or Torrington?

Would the OP be interested in moving a little bit north to Northampton, MA? It seems like that town has a lot of what you desire with a lower cost of living compared to CA (but not CT).

The OP would probably feel right at home in the Stonington/Mystic area with some hippies, vineyards, etc, sounds like the area where she lives now in Ca. Forget to mention all the great seafood restaurants there, but my favorites are eating outside at the crab shacks.

Comparing to that area? No way. Mystic area is dead in the winter too.

For example, New Haven has better nightlife and culture than that silly fake stuff at the casinos. More music venues too. The coast Greenwich to New Haven simply has more action than the Mystic area, as much as I love it (but certainly not for the casinos).

Pretty sure they are asking for good schools, safety, walkable area with the essential businesses. CT does that better than most. It is a great place to live.
