What would a commute be like say from RTE 34 Orange/Derby to say Albany TPKE in Canton?
Normal commute times......leaving early, say 5:30 am leaving to come home around 5 pm? Remember I live right off the Merritt, Exit 58. I am not familiar with Canton so any advice is always welcomed.
It would be about 50 miles each way and Canton is off the beaten path so a lot of the drive will be on back roads. I would only do it if I had flexibility to work from home in bad weather. I have had bad experiences with the secondary roads in and around Canton in the winter.

Most on here know me and my hellish commute I have now. Derby to Scarsdale, NY. Every day.
This. I personally would never commute from Canton to Derby, but I would also never do your current commute. If your current commute is tolerable, then Canton to Derby will be a breeze. Route 8 south to Derby is so much easier than driving to Scarsdale daily.
My god - I don’t know why you do that to yourself!
I, too, sort of remember you taking another job closer.
Wallingford. Accepted and my place would not let me leave and gave me a ridiculous raise if I stayed. I wasn't even leaving for money reasons either so I sold myself out. Lol. Wrong decision but whatever. Hindsight.....

1 hour in the am and 2 to 2 1/2 hours at night.
Though it’s about 50 miles from Derby to Canton, your commute would be a pretty consistent hour each way. You’d go straight up Route 8 to exit 42 - Route 118 east to Route 4 east to Route 179 north which takes you to Collinsville, which is the center of Canton. I assume you are going to one of the car dealers on Route 44 which are a couple miles past Collinsville closer to the Simsbury border. This is before you get any of the Hartford area traffic.
The nice part of this trip is that you are going against traffic so you won’t hit much, if any traffic. The bad part is that it would be difficult in inclement winter weather. You are going up into the northern Naugatuck River Valley and then up into the hills east of the river. It’s a beautiful drive though and takes not only though much of the Naugatuck Valley, you go through Harwinton, Burlington and most of Canton. It’s quite pretty. Jay
