Does anyone know about Southbury schools for autistic kids?
We have friends in Southbury and Middlebury. They said to stay away.
We've been in CT twenty years with special needs child to young adult -- really bad experience mostly in the school districts here in state. New Canaan and Ellington were the worst.
most people use lawyers from the first meeting because school staff are so combative.
Ellington, a terrible district Sped Dir. is difficult. Combative SD.
The CT state dept of education rules against parents, they're known for this.our lawyer advised not to even bother. Parents do go to Hartford to protest often, but it doesn't help much. Moving foew miles to NY was like an amazing relief, wonderful compared to CT imho. We stuck it out in CT but in retrospect, I wish we'd left long ago for better services in NY or MA.
CT is top 5 in public education according to multiple sources. Just ask CT Artist. Any child can get a quality education in all 169 districts if they want it. It's there, it's available, free of charge, they just have to want it. We're a major league pipeline feed for the Ivies. Top recruits along with many overseas standouts. TN is short season A-ball.
The OP was asking about special needs education.
For that CT is lacking, despite it being great for regular ed. Spec. ed is very difficult and combative, imho, here.

That could very well be the case.
Fairfielders tell me that town is knee deep in lawsuits for spec ed. The budget is taking a beating. Cutting paras next year is on the table among other things.

That is shocking, I heard that Fairfield was good. That's good to know, though!

The BOE for Fairfield can’t hire enough. They have many open positions year round.
Only know this as my oldest on summer break from college worked as a Para aide last summer.
They offered her a FT job for the academic year after. She had to remind them she was going back to college out of state

You have to understand that Fairfield is a large town serving a lot of kids. Most have parents that are viscous about education and willing to fight for services their kids may or may not need.
I say this because a close family member did this for both her kids when it was questionable on whether they really needed them. Apparently there is a group of parents that help others sue the town for services and certain attorneys that feed on this. Doesn’t affect the quality of education received by students. Jay

Exactly. Affluent parents know how to play the system and aren't afraid to lawyer up to get what they want. Just because there are law suits doesn't mean that the kids weren't getting appropriate services. I've had many, many conversations with friend, family, even friends of friends. In a lot of cases, I've told people, no your kid is getting appropriate services. You are asking too much. You are entitled by law to a free and appropriate public education - NOT the best education money can buy. Some affluent parents who pay high taxes in good districts expect to get the absolute max.
