Hi,

I and my husband are new Yale postdocs coming in the begining of December. We have a 16 months old son. We are looking for a safe affordable apartment to rent. We are not local (currently in Texas) and will have to rent over the Internet. I figured that East Rock is a safe place, but I cannot find anything there. I also heard that Westville is supposed to be safe and nice for families with kids. Is this true? Could you please give me any specific information about Westville areas (where to go and where not to go).

Thanks a lot!

Yulia.

I lived as a single woman on the outskirts of Westville and felt perfectly safe. Like any city, use your street smarts. I would stay away from any road off of Valley St. A lot of Westville feels more suburban than city, especially the wealthier areas like around Forest Rd (Rt 122). That neighborhood is perfectly safe. There are a ton of rentals (mainly 3 family houses, close together, converted to apartments) in a fine neighborhood with a more city feel around Elm Street, the section near Hubinger St, Hobart St, etc.). Stray too far from SCSU and it can get iffy down Goffe St. The end of Ella Grasso Blvd (locals just call it "Boulevard") is also nice if you stay north of Whalley Ave. Hopefully this helps you out a little!

I am a single female currently living in Westville on Central Ave and love it! I feel safe at night walking in the neighborhood- Westville is one of the safest neighborhoods in New Haven IMO. There are many families with younger children in the area and many multiple family homes so there at least always a couple that are for rent every month. I had no problem finding my apartment back in December.
Hope you find what you are looking for!

Hi,

Thank your very much for your replies.
I now feel much more confident looking for a place in Westville. East Rock is something everyone recommends, but there is almost nothing available there, and the available ones are really pricy.
I might have more questions later.
Thanks again for your help!
