I am a 23 year old moving to the New Haven Area for Grad School at University of New Haven. I am looking for a cheap studio apartment in a safe, nice area not too far from campus. I am from the Detroit area and know nothing of the New Haven area. What are my best options? Thanks.

Two quick questions - do you have a budget in mind and do you have a car? If you don't have a car, no worries - because NH is very walkable and the campus presence in that city is huge since there are numerous universities there - U New Haven, Yale, SCSU, etc.

UNH is actually in West Haven, not New Haven proper. Plenty of rentals around, and there's not too many "bad" parts of WH.

You may need a car though, it would certainly help anyway.

My friend had an apartment just down the hill from campus on either Campbell or 1st...I can't remember which. She was there for two years and was fine. She also had a car but did not need to use it to get to class, which was very convenient. I think she found the apartment through some program the university had for students to find rentals.

I do have a car. I'd rather not spend more than $1000/month with utilities included. I'm in town on the 20th and 21st to apartment search and do university stuff, so I am hoping to get some ideas down before then. I've read a lot of mixed reviews on numerous apartments and areas of the city. As a result I am more confused than ever.

If I were you, I'd look mostly in West Haven just for budgetary and commuting reasons. Apartment complexes are indeed mixed in the area (particularly some of the ones in downtown New Haven and the Wintergreen Apartments which are supposedly full of loud undergrads) so you might be better off looking for a smaller complex or a multi-family house. There are several listings on Craigslist that are in your price range.

You could also consider the Westville section of New Haven (East Rock is nice but a little far--you would have at least a 15 minute commute without traffic). The area just across the West Haven border into New Haven on Route 1 is not particularly nice so I would avoid it.

Check with UNH, they might be able to help you locate a decent apartment. I agree with others that you should stick with West Haven.

Welcome to CT. Good advice is to look into the multi-family option. There are lots of good homes and good landlords out there. good luck

I would look on craigslist for a multi-family home. I find they tend to have a bit more charm and it feels more independent to me. You would probably be able to find a nice one bedroom for about 800.00 to be honest- based on what I've seen. Utilities not included, I would say.

Thanks. Are there any areas of West Haven to avoid?
