Ok, so I have heard people swear by this box that you don't have to pay for anything just the box.
My wife's friend at work loves it. I asked someone about it at Best Buy & they said while it's not illegal it's not legal either. It's a gray area.

Does anyone have any experience with it? Or Know anyone who has one & there thoughts on it?

Kodi® is (formerly known as XBMC™) is an award-winning free and open source (GPL) software media center for playing videos, music, pictures, games, and more. Kodi runs on Linux, OS X, Windows, iOS, and Android, featuring a 10-foot user interface for use with televisions and remote controls.

You can go to the website and download it, and it is perfectly legal.

Team Kodi maintains an officially neutral stance on what users do with their own software. Kodi is open source software, and as long as the General Public License is followed, you are welcome to do with it as you like. So while we don’t love this use of Kodi, as long as you know what illegal and potentially dangerous things you are getting yourself into and accept the fact that the Team will not be providing you with any support, then you are welcome to do what you like.

The problem is this: There have been a wave of sellers who decided to make a quick buck modifying Kodi, installing broken piracy add-ons, advertising that Kodi let’s you watch free movies and TV, and then vanishing when the user buys the box and finds out that the add-on they were sold on was a crummy, constantly breaking mess.

Just like BitTorrent. The technology itself is not illegal. It's just another tool used for downloading files. Same with Kodi, it is merely an open source media center. That said, most of the time, it is the number one tool used for pirated material. The plugins and repos that you install into Kodi give it the ability to access pirated or illegally shared copies of movies and TV shows, even live streams of cable channels. That is what most people use Kodi for. Same for BitTorrent. Most people use it to download illegal torrents. Having said that, it's kind of like someone telling you guns are illegal. Guns are not illegal, it's what you use them for that determine the legality of such a tool. Same goes for Kodi and BitTorrent.

I would say there is probably a very small number of people who use Kodi just to serve their own privately owned DVDs collection.

Best Buy is not a good place to get advice of ANY kind, let alone legal advice.

In addition to the hardware business, Best Buy is in the content-selling business. Pretty much all content sellers take a dim view of customers using content they acquired online from pirate sources and any tools that enable that.

Back to the original question about a Kodi box. I am quite experienced with Kodi. Ask me. Hand's down the cheapest and one of best ways is to load it on a Amazon Fire TV stick. The stick costs $40. You can side load Kodi and any add-ons you may want. I use ADBfire which is a tool you run on a laptop or desktop to connect to the stick. You can also do it directly from the device. I won't go into the details of Kodi. Just google and start reading. I have Kodi running on 2 fire sticks as well as a laptop which I as use as a home theater PC.
