I used these for a DVD player around 2000 until HDMI got big. What were component video connections used for, besides older DVD players? (These use three cables for video and two for audio.)

Did you notice the diff between the component connectors and the single AV connector? I didn't notice a big diff.

The component video you speak of supports up to 1080p. These (RGB) are analog connections whereas HDMI is digital. The single AV will do 480 lines. If you are playing a standard definition video (480p) it will not make a difference. If you are playing back in HD you cannot even use the single AV connection.

It was basically DVDs and Laserdiscs. Just an older technology. Basically to provide higher resolution that composite cable could not. Of course HDMI's big advantage is combining even higher resolution video as well as digital audio into one cable.

My Wii game system uses a component connection to HD TVs. There was no HDMI adapter for the Wii.

Digital Visual Interface (DVI) began in April 1999, and HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) began in 2002.

Older analog Component YPbPr video connectors are just there for compatibility with any equipment that is too old for digital interfaces. Composite video is for standard definition and Component video is for high definition.
