Hello All,

My husband and I are coming down from Wisconsin next week. We're going to tour the Phoenix Boats factory (in Tulllahoma) on Thursday and staying at the Days Inn in Cookeville. Friday, we get to go to Livingston to pick up our new boat! We're both so excited!! We are also looking for a nice place to move to in the future. The winters up here are so cold, and it's not good for either of us anymore. Reading through everything, it sounds like Cookeville is the perfect place.

Now for my question(s)....My husband will be out with the salesman learning about the new boat, what is there to do or see for me for a couple of hours?? What kind of stores are in the area?? As I mentioned, we're staying in the Days Inn ( I hope its nice), I plan on going back to Cookeville after dropping my husband off at the boat dealership. So I have a couple of hours to kill and I'd rather have a look around than sitting in the hotel room.

Any suggestions would really be appreciated, thanks!

Here's some websites to look at:

Cookeville Thrive
Cookeville Chamber

We came here 3 years ago from Northern Illinois. Big change, both in weather and in culture, but do love most things about it.

Welcome to Tennessee!

The Days Inn is very close to the visitors center in Cookeville:

Cookeville, TN Visitor Center | Must See Cookeville

They could probably give you great suggestions. But here's mine:

While you're in Livingston you might want to drive up to Dale Hollow Lake. It'll make you want to get your boat in the water immediately. It's a gorgeous lake. You'll probably want to do that with your husband as it's an experience that should be shared. The Willow Grove recreation area and marina is my favorite and gives you a stunning view of the lake.

Willow Grove Resort & Marina on Dale Hollow Lake, TN

Cookeville has typical shopping (Kohl's, JCPenney, Sears, Belk, Walmart, Kmart, etc.) but if you want to see some local stuff, check out the Market on the Square which is located on the courthouse square downtown. It's an ecclectic mixture of little, locally owned boutiques. Also on the courthouse square are some great little restaurants and cafés.

A few blocks west of there is Cookeville's Historic Westside. It's anchored by the Depot Museum, and there are several restaurants, cafés, galleries, and interesting shops around it. The main branch of the library is also near there, as are the history museum, the performing arts center, the children's museum, and beautiful new Dogwood Park. The Broadway Boutique Mall is a collection of 46 locally owned boutiques across from the depot museum that would give you a really good feel for the wonderful and friendly people of Cookeville and Tennessee.

I can guarantee you that if you popped your head into any of the stores around there and explain that you're considering moving to the area, you won't want to leave.

Check out Cookeville's downtown association to get more info on places you might want to visit.

Have a wonderful trip!

Thank you all for the info. Looks like I have alot to see!! My husband is going to Dale Hollow Lake with the salesman to test out the boat and learn all the things about the boat, I won't be going with him for that, but Saturday morning, we are planning to go back to the lake so I can see it.

How far is the westside from the Days Inn? Is it pretty easy to get to? (I'm not bad with directions, but not real good either, especially when I'm alone) I would love to check out all those boutiques!!

Sparkman....what is the biggest change in the weather from Cookeville to N.Illinois? Good and bad? We both can't handle the extreme cold and I can't handle extreme heat. I know TN doesn't get as cold and doesn't have as much snow, but I'm alittle scared its going to be too hot for me. I might have to become a hermit in the summer if its real hot!

Ralph's is open until 11:30pm M-S and until 6pm on Sundays. They make fresh doughnuts throughout the day. I was in there just a couple of weeks ago at night and had hot butter twists fresh out of the kitchen. It was goooood.

It's VERY easy to get from the Days Inn to Westside. Days Inn is located on Walnut Ave. When you leave Days Inn, turn right onto Walnut Ave. Walnut will wind its way through town and will end up in downtown. When you get to Broad Street, you're in the Westside Historic District. Turn left onto Broad to get to the Depot and parking. (Ralph's doughnuts--the best on the planet--are located a block south of the Depot on Cedar. You can't miss it.)
