On George Halford's radio show this week he interviewed Mike Lepley, vice president of the Rail Trails Friends Group, who hinted that the long range plan is to build the trail all the way from Monterey to the Caney Fork River in Buffalo Valley for a total of 30 miles. Obviously it'll be years before that's done, but it's a very ambitious plan. I know right now the city is talking about extending the trail west from the depot to Cane Creek Park, and Algood is talking about extending it east from downtown Algood up the mountain to Parragon. Connecting Parragon to Monterey is going to be a real bear. It should be a lot easier to extend it out to Baxter and then to Buffalo Valley.

How many years now has this talk of a rail trail been going on, 20 or more? And we have a few miles of paved trail located from Cookeville to Algood within the city limits. I'm not holding my breath. I'm sure I will have long met my maker by the time it reaches Monterey, if it ever does.

Yeah seriously, it's been 20 years or so. The portion within Monterey is also built. But connecting Monterey down the mountain to Algood is going to take a lot of money and engineering.

The portion in Monterey is a flat portion paved through town some of which was already a traveled pathway. I guess if you want to take that instead of the sidewalks. Part of it is handy for the kids to walk to school.
I wonder if some of the folks who talk about this rail trail have actually seen the topography.
