We are seriously looking at Cookeville for retirement. We currently live in Austin Texas. Very high property taxes and high utilities. We live in a 2500 sq foot home. I was also wondering about shopping. I am happy to not have what we have here but I was wondering why no Costco? Any hope of one coming soon? I love Costco and am willing to drive to Nashville if need be.

Any help on cost of utilities would be very appreciated. We will look for a home smaller, thinking 1800 sq feet. In retirement every penny counts.

How are the winters, really miss winter. We are from WV but have lived here 25 years. Cannot wait to leave!

Thanks, any info is appreciated.

I'm afraid it'll be years before Cookeville gets a Costco. Cookeville already has a Sam's Club, and the chance of having an additional mega big box membership wholesale store is remote for our region. We just don't have the population to support it. There actually aren't that many Costcos around here in this part of the country. As big as Nashville it, it has just two. Knoxville has just one, and so does Chattanooga. The Tri Cities (Bristol-Johnson City-Kingsport) has over a half million people and doesn't have a Costco, either. I like Costco and miss it, too, but Sam's Club works for me. Otherwise, others drive to Nashville every few weeks or so for their Costco fix, which I totally understand.

Anyway, there's lots of retail in Cookeville: Belk, JCPenney, Kohl's, HomeGoods, TJMaxx, Kirkland's, Academy Sports, Ross, Staples, Office Max, PetSmart, PetCo, Old Navy, and a bunch of grocery stores including Aldi (Trader Joe's less hip cousin) and very nice Kroger, Food Lion, and Publix stores with more on the way. And, of course, there are homegrown vegetable stands all over the place and several farmers markets.

If you live in Cookeville, you'll likely be under the auspices of the Cookeville Electric Department whose residential rates are 10.04¢/kWh which is slightly less than the state average of 10.1¢/kWh and quite a bit less than the national average of 11.88¢/kWh. Check your rate in Austin to see how it compares.

Winters around here are wonderful. We do get snow, but rarely more than a couple of inches at a time, usually just enough to make everything beautiful and shut down the schools for a few days. Then it warms back up before the next snowfall.

I moved here a few years ago from Knoxville after living all over the world, and I love it here. I'm not ready to retire yet but definitely plan on staying here when I do. In the meantime, several friends and family have retired to Cookeville after coming to visit me and falling in love with the area. I can't recommend it enough. Welcome to Cookeville!

We live about halfway between Cookeville and Crossville so the closest Costco for us was in Knoxville. We found Sam's Club in Cookeville and my wife is very happy with it. By the way, we retired here last year and I'm a Mountaineer from outside Morgantown. Love it here.

I moved to Cookeville earlier this year, and love Costco. Looking at the mileage from Cookeville to the Costco in Nashville/Knoxville, they are the same distance, the one in Chattanooga is 20 miles further. Since the one in Chattanooga is actually in Georgia, it is cheaper as the tax is 2.25% cheaper then Nashville. I wait until I need a fair amount of stuff and go to the one in Chattanooga.

And, it's a pretty awesome drive thru the Valley on 111 to get there.

The drive between Cookeville and Chattanooga really is beautiful. I definitely prefer that drive than the drive between Cookeville and Knoxville. If I were a Costco fan, I'd probably prefer going to the Chattanooga store, too, even without the sales tax savings.

If you do move here, look outside the Cookeville city limits. Of course, you'll save some more in property taxes. Electricity is from Upper Cumberland Electric Membership Cooperative. I've found that my rates seem to be a little cheaper than I was paying inside the city limits.

+1

While highway access to Chattanooga isn't as good (111 is not exactly Interstate grade the entire route), the benefit with going to Chattanooga is two fold: traffic is a fraction of the mess in Nashville so you make up that 20 minute difference in commute VERY quickly once at the destination since you can sit in 20 minute traffic anywhere in Nashville just at an intersection/interchange; plus you mentioned the option of getting out of Tennessee for shopping since you save a few cents if that's your goal.

Trust me, you'll likely run into a traffic jam just getting out of Nashville between Mt Juliet and Lebanon waiting 15-25 minutes through traffic. HWY 111 has never had a jam on any of the numerous drives I've had to Chattanooga in my life from the Cookeville area. Chattanooga is just a few extra miles, but the benefit of the traffic down there is worth it everytime. I stay away from Nashville at all costs these days. Unless its very specific (like a Titans or Predators game) there's no services/businesses of significance in Nashville that aren't available in Chattanooga.

Thanks everyone, the info is very helpful. I live in Austin, very liberal, I am conservative but not religious, not organized religion I should say. Looking for a low crime, great community, low cost of living area where it is beautiful. I am so tired of looking at burned up landscape. Texas is HOT! I so miss the mountains!

I would hope the community is open to people that are private and feel no need to share their belief. I am looking at flights now, would love to visit in the Fall season.

I compared our electric rate, remember Texas has deregulated electric. Companies must compete. My rate is 10.1. We have natural gas to heat and cook. Love it but the homes I am looking at in Cookeville appear to be all electric. I can live with that if I have to.

If the house that you end up buying has gas to it (for heater/fireplace..etc), and has a crawlspace under it, it should be easy to intercept the gas line under the house and plumb it to the kitchen. My house has an electric stove/oven, and I prefer gas. When I replace the appliances next year, I will just run a gas line to the kitchen, as I have already looked under the house and it should be no problem, and cheap to do.
