We do get tornados though, but fortunately, any given house has a low probability of getting struck. Occasionally, a freakishly large tornado comes through (Joplin, Missouri got one), but those are rare.

Thank goodness. That thing was a disaster waiting to happen. There are reasons we have zoning laws and this is one of them.

It felt pretty stable when I was there. Plus it's his freedom to build a treehouse like that. Not everybody builds cookie cutter buildings. Who is the government to tell a man that he can't build a structure on his own property? I do believe this is case #35,626,861,537 that the government should buzz off in.

Default Crossville World Largest Tree House

The last I heard, the tree house is still closed to the public. The TN State Fire Marshall closed it for safety violations. There was an episode about the tree house on the Animal Planet channel show, Treehouse Masters. The Treehouse Master, Pete Nelson, tried to help out the owner/builder of the tree house, by fixing some of the safety issues, like railings and replacing stair treads, but I doubt it was enough to satisfy fire safety issues.

I've visited the outside of the tree house, but there's no way I would go up in it. It is a wooden chimney, essentially. It's just a fire waiting to happen. It was way past due to be closed to the public, in my opinion.

By the way, there are no zoning laws in Cumberland County. There are "codes" in the city of Crossville, but enforcement seems spotty. Building codes in the county were enacted sometime after we moved here, five and a half years ago.

It was one of the best attractions in Crossville. People came from all over the country to see it and then spent mega bucks in our town. My own visitors are sorry to see it go. Thanks for the good times Horace.

Ran across this elsewhere and was considering a visit - Google just has old data - anyone know the current status? Can visitors still look at it from the outside?

Thanks

It is still closed to the public. I'm not sure if you can see it that well from the road.

You will not be able to get very close because of the locked gates....
