All things considered, it's a small price to pay as opposed to walking into Corpus naked.

Are there some dangerous areas I should avoid looking in to rent?
Depending on your street smarts, there are some places I would not suggest to a swf. There are some apartment complexes I've been to that are downright scary. Waterford and the one across the street come to mind first. And don't be sucked in by someone's cheap "garage apartment." I went to look at one that was literally a garage, with the door that still goes up, only exit was thru the house with sketchy renters, not allowed to run ac during the day while I was gone, bathroom was part of the kitchen... Personally, and I'm fairly new to CC, I would not think a swf would be comfortable living downtown. I have female co-workers who live in lofts downtown but they all have male so's and complain about parking their cars on the street and the safety of coming and going by themselves at night.

You need to be careful no matter where you live, but this is my $0.02 of where I would probably look last for a place to live.
