It is very hard to say if life guards, in this case could have prevented this. It seems like it might have been at a time of the day when people were not using the pool. There is no way, even if life guards were used the pools can be manned 24/7. Regardless this is just a horrible tragedy. Of course the first question everyone will ask is: where were the parents and I have to admit I thought the same but again accidents do happen. My heart goes out to this family, the sadness of losing a child has to be one of the saddest loss a family can have.
Where were the parents who are responsible for their child? No one should ever swim alone, and children should be watched by their parents.....you can't protect everyone all the time. There are signs posted...."No lifeguard on duty"..."Swim at your own risk".
Yes...it's a tragedy that was totally preventable by the child's family.
I was just going to say, my kids do not get in the pool unless I am in it with them. They know the rules.
It is the responsibility of parents to keep control of their kids on a cruise ship.
I put it to my kids this way: All the people on the ship have spent their money to be there. They are all looking for fun. It is NOT your position to do anything that will impede another person's fun. That includes : cutting in line, being rude to anyone, splashing people in the pool, being loud and obnoxious. That is the RULE for being on a cruise ship. It is included in the cruise agreement, read it.
I also add "Stay with ME at all times, unless I give you permission to be in camp"
Perhaps other parents let their kids run wild on ships ?
I don't know what happened with this incident and I have a lot of sympathy for the parents. Losing a child is a terrible thing.
A generalization, though. There are too many parents out there who don't care who their child is bothering as long as their child is not bothering them. They turn their children loose and ignore them. Maybe they think it is the responsibility of the village to raise their child.
My child would never have been in a pool without me or a trusted family member there to watch them. There are too many dangers in the world to simply turn a child loose and hope for the best.

I think we can all agree on this one; the problem is: parents do not always realize how quickly these things can happen; a tragedy like this will live in the family's mind for life. Being a frequent cruiser I have witnessed many situation where the kids are somewhat out of hand or not being supervised, but I have also seen a lot of wonderful kids with parents who are doing a great job or appear to be doing a great job.
