I think today or tomorrow is the one-year anniversary of the all too incompetent shipwreck of the Costa Concordia, which claimed over 30 lives. I still can't fathom the stupidity of moving THAT close to shore to say "Hi" to the island of Giglio.
At any rate, I had previously read they were trying to do the tilt-up operation before winter came. Now the engineers are saying it will be next summer and they are still hammering out strategies. Part of the problem is that the skin, or any attachable part of the ship, was not meant to withstand those kinds of stresses - those involved in being pulled upright. Some worry that, if not done correctly, the ship could break apart. The whole world will be watching when they proceed to put that ship upright.
I'm not real confident that this is going to work anyway. I wonder why they aren't trying to get as much weight off the ship before they try to flip it. I would think that they would get out the blow torches and start cutting out anything that they could to lighten the load. Interiors could easily get scrapped, plumbing and wiring and hvac systems scrapped etc.

I agree with the idea of turning it into a shell, so it's easier to tilt. I am also wondering if there will be a hoist, or several of them, which will be "pushing" from the other side. There should be, an an instinctive level. That ship should never sail again. Bad, bad karma.
They are worried about doing anything that might cause it to shift and slide down into the ocean off the "ledge" it's on. That's why they haven't off loaded anything but contaminants.
That's true. If it slid either forward or backward from that ledge, it would plunge off its shelf into deeper water. If anybody should be carrying some serious guilt issues these days, it's probably Schettino.
The buck stops with the Captain, Schettino take notice.
