Mentally disabled workers for Henry's Turkey Service were subjected to abuse and neglect for decades at this bunkhouse in Atalissa, while many looked the other way. On Wednesday, an outraged jury awarded 32 mistreated men $240 million.
Over 40 years, Henry’s sent hundreds of disabled men from Texas to Iowa, where they worked in a West Liberty meat-processing plant for 41 cents an hour.
What type of people do we have in this country that run businesses and corporations this badly? Who are these types of CEOs and why are they allowed to operate like this? It should ANGER every American worker.
Yet another news story now about these men suing Texas for their part in this mess.
Henry’s decades-long practice of paying the men less than the minimum wage was well-known to the U.S. Department of Labor, which over 15 years repeatedly cited the company for wage violations but imposed no penalties.
After the bunkhouse was shut down, the Labor Department pursued the matter and won a $1.76 million judgment against the company for federal labor law violations.
There is something very wrong and sick about that.
This is sickening. How could the Dept. of Labor know that this plant was paying the workers 41 cents an hour with no breaks, and not do anything for 15 years?!
The owners should be in prison for the rest of their lives. They are as bad as the man in Cleveland who kept 3 women prisoners for a decade. It sounds like these disabled men were housed in equally bad conditions, even resulting in the death of some of them.
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Henry's Turkey Service agreed in legal briefs filed Friday that each plaintiff can recover $50,000 apiece, plus interest, under federal law, compared to $7.5 million a jury awarded each May 1.
That's totally wrong! $50,000 each doesn't cover much for their years of continued annual services. And why is it that the jury can be overturned in what they awarded?

Tragic that in these times people will still treat workers like animals if they can get away with it.
