In the height of hubris, Bill Gates called for bringing in more immigrants for high-tech jobs under visas, while Microsoft announces 18,000 layoffs of high-tech employees.

Let us be real honest here. The only reason the US Chamber of Commerce, Bill Gates, etc want more high-tech visas is to replace US employees with cheap contract labor. My son saw this happen in his company where US employees were being laid off and replaced the H1-B contract labor.

We do not have a shortage of STEM employees. I know of some in Dallas, a high-tech center, who were replaced and ended up selling computers at electronics stores.

American citizens are too lazy to do what it takes to renew their skills.

In fact, there's one thread on here about a person who was asked to come in to a new job, by the CEO, and work a day for free, obviously to get a feel for each other and most replied like it was the greatest crime of our era!

America is lost....we have an entitlement mentality.

Hogwash, he believes in bringing in the best talent for the job. Some of these people from foreign countries are really smart and dedicated. Also, your talking about small numbers. Why not do something about illegal immigration? Arrest Juan Valdez for using John Smiths SS number and send him packing.

The two aren't related. When you acquire a large company like Nokia, you're going to have a lot of redundancy.... there needs to be a purging.

Now, for new jobs, you need qualified individuals. The US has a limited number of qualified individuals for high tech jobs.

There is a lot more merit to bring in highly skilled immigrants into the United States than unskilled laborers to clean hotel rooms or wash dishes who would more likely become a burden to the taxpayers.

Not saying that the latter should be totally excluded, but America already has a surplus of unskilled people in the inner cities.

Technical savants are a rarer breed and can really help accelerate economic growth in the country.

Hmm... all those people Microsoft lays off, THEY weren't qualified (though they were before the acquisition). But the new visa workers from third world countries are 100% qualified, you betcha.

Pull the other one, it's got bells on.

Actually, that is against most states labor laws. Worker's compensation would throw a sh*tfit over that too.

For different jobs, of course.

That's okay. Since you did such a good job with the first one, I'll let you keep going...

Working a day for free doesn't mean that the person is going to get injured on the job. Millions of people go to work every single day without getting injured. Worker's compensation has almost zero chance of applying here.

I don't buy it. You mean to tell me we don't have thousands, maybe even hundreds of thousands of people with talent for technical jobs? I just don't believe it. I have a hard time believing that not one of those 18,000 people laid off didn't have enough talent for the job. What the other guy said was right on the money. These companies are firing permanent employees so they can hire contract employees.

We have a very low workforce participation rate in this country, and I don't think it's all because we're not smart or dedicated enough. I've heard of thousands of people with STEM degrees who are either working for very small salaries or not working in their fields.
