A giraffe being transported in an open-air truck bed on a highway in South Africa died Thursday after reportedly hitting its head on an overpass. “All we can ascertain at this stage is severe head trauma. We are continuing our investigation with the view to possibly lay criminal charges against those responsible,” Rick Allan of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals told Johannesburg’s Eye Witness News.

The giraffe had to pay the price for their stupidity. What a shame. :-(

Did you know that giraffe's in serious decline as a species ? I was reading that on the BBC News recently. With most of these vanishing speci, the gene pool is getting smaller and smaller and it won't be viable to try and bring them back with breeding programs pretty soon. Almost there with wolves and of course, the last white rhino died in 2014, I think it was.

Humans are such good people.....NOT.

If nothing else, you'd think that at least the monetary value of these animals would motivate their owners/keepers to take better care of them.

But, as with these monkeys, one can find incompetence everywhere.

We destroy God's animals for sport, cage them in inhumane conditions, etc. This is just wrong on so many levels. I hope the driver and transportation company face massive fines and penalties for their stupidity.

Id disagree. Im dont condone hunting exotic animals, but its one quick shot and its done. The poor giraffe in this story had to endure stressful conditions for who knows how long, then get thrown in an even more stressful environment (a moving vehicle), and then face blunt force trauma. I can only hope that it was sedated, but it doesnt sound like it, as its head was up high enough to allow it to come in contact with the bridge. Dang this story makes me mad!!!!
