Strange that I never encountered it at some point. I coulda had stuff to sell on eBay!
I guess it just wasn't something my kid took to. She was obsessed with frogs. She wanted to have a tv show like Steve Eric's when she grew up only with amphibians. We even went through about four real pet frogs. No Hello Kitty, though!
Anyway, ya learn something new every day. Somebody mentioned a Sanrio store, too. I've never heard of that, either. Maybe it really just was more of a West Coast thing?
I just want you to know that I read this right before I went to sleep last night and it truly disturbed my sleep. I had some sort of weird dream about a little girl growing whiskers and hiding a tail under her skirt. Blech. It wasn't even cute.
I want Hello Kitty to be a cat. Not a little girl.
I thought I had put this thread, this issue behind me and moved on - but it has crossed my mind a few times through out the day and not while perusing this site. I do not know what this company's game is, but they have shaken my world a bit. I may have to seek damages against them. HK is a cat. I need her to be a cat.
They can claim Kitty White is a human being with cat ears and whiskers, but she's just an example of personification. You know, human characteristics given to anything other than a human being. It's part of storytelling or pretend that goes back to ancient times. Don't take it too seriously when they tell you that Peter Rabbit isn't really a rabbit.

Not just a West Coast thing. My sister, who's almost 27, grew up with a stuffed Hello Kitty and both of us had Sanrio merchandise (pencil cases, erasers, puzzles, etc.) as kids. I remember there being a Sanrio store in the local mall, too. This was in Arlington, Texas (suburb of Dallas/Fort Worth).

My friends and I even had a serious, grown up discussion about this at dinner tonight...is it a marketing ploy? Is she a furbie? Is this perverted????
This year marks the first HelloKittyCon hence the PR blitz. And the 40th anniversary!
Haha true! I think my adult daughter is going to HelloKittyCon. She's 27 and grew up with it.
