Well, doesn't that also change the availability and opportunity for these acts? I'm not very well versed in Catholicism, but all the kids who help out carrying stuff, standing besides the priests, other duties, aren't they only boys and not girls?

In fact, just sitting in that church thinking of how many thousands of young boys have been violated by their church leaders across the world turned my stomach. I wanted to walk out soon after getting there, but didn't want to offend my friends who were getting married. (I didn't stand when the priest asked people to stand and I most definitely didn't put any money in the offering plate.) After hearing this story today about all the kiddie porn, I have come to a decision---never again will I attend a Catholic event. I will tell whomever invited me that I cannot attend until the Catholic followers stand up to the Vatican and call for the heads of every known sex offender in their organization. I would love to see this church literally crumble--never to be resurrected ever again. It's the wealthiest religious organization on the planet and they have wreaked havoc across the planet for centuries--it is a vile and evil group. And, they are tax exempt--so you could say that most governments support their activities. Essentially, they get rewarded to *** kids. Why the hell anyone would follow this sick organization is beyond me.

Hey, has anyone seen Louis CK's bit about Catholic priests and the real purpose of the Catholic church? It's highly shocking---t's meant to be, and almost difficult to watch the ugly truth, but it really hits home about this topic. I am so glad someone has finally done something like this to wake more people up!
Is it fair to lump all of them into the same camp? I don't have any figures on me, but are the majority of them really this bad, or is it a few bad apples amongst an organization that's (mostly) doing good, or at the very least, nothing too shady.

Yes, blanket statements are not fair---there likely are Catholic priests who do not molest children or make, collect and watch kiddie porn like the scumbag in this news story. But there are a helluva lot that do and have done for a long, long time running. We've been hearing these stories for the past two decades, perhaps longer. Moreover, the Roman Catholic church has a very long history of supporting and performing evil acts, murder and torture---the Spanish Inquisition, the Crusades, supporting Nazi facism, telling people in Africa not to wear condoms (AIDs spread because of this), banning birth control (resulting in tens of millions of kids being born into abject poverty), satanic rituals and ceremonies, genocide of indigenous peoples of the Americas (it's no coincidence that close to 90% of Latin American countries are now Catholic), ties to the mafia, and now widespread child molestation. How their followers can continue to ignore the evil before them is beyond me. It is mass delusion of the most epic proportions!

Giving that this immensely powerful organization has billions of followers (and wealth beyond anyone's wildest dreams), it has the potential to be a force for good in the world. But to the contrary, they have a loooooong history of doing evil acts and they continue to cause unthinkable suffering while doing very little real good--to this very day.

You would think with all these stories about pedophile priests that there would be parishioners leaving in droves and the church would cease to exist. This cult has it's members so brainwashed that they think Jesus started the church and Peter was the first pope and that they are the one true church, you should see the BS these people post in the Christianity section, laughable to say the least.

Gay or straight, most people don't get sexually turned on by children! To say that celibacy might have something to do with priest finding children sexually exciting is disgusting. Normal people just don't look at children like that no matter what the circumstance. They're children!

This is nothing new, and it has been happening for a long, long time with the catholic church. It has happened way too many times to call it a fluke, or a couple of bad apples. The way the church covered up for these evil criminals for years says it all. What kind of human beings would cover up something so vile happening to children? Protecting children should have been their first concern.

Nobody raises an eyebrow anymore when you hear about another priest with boys. That's just sad.

To be a pedophile is to have the urges / attraction. Not all pedophiles molest children.

Also, not all child molesters are pedophiles. Sometimes its a crime of opportunity.

This is just disgusting. I am neither a Roman Catholic nor a psychologist/psychiatrist, but I think requiring priestly celibacy limits the number of men that are sexually "normal" that would be interested in joining the priesthood and therefore there is a higher percentage of pedophiles. I think in past decades (or even centuries), when there was much stronger societal pressure for all men to get married, the priesthood was an escape route for men that had no interest in marriage or heterosexual relations.

As terrible as this and the other incidents of clerical sexual abuse are, the fact is the vast majority of priests are NOT child molesters, and that the percentage of priests that are pedophiles is no different from the general population, i.e, around 1-2%. Having said that, the Roman Catholic Church is guilty of a massive cover up of this problem, and the pope really needs to dismiss every single bishop and archbishop that ignored this problem and moved abusive priests around from parish to parish. Then the church should open up the priesthood to married men and make celibacy optional.

Any place where there are children, you can have a problem. Church, scouts, sports - you name it. It's just adds insult to injury when happens in a church. I think it occurs more in the Catholic church because of the lack of transparency. It's like the perfect hideout.
