Doesn't HK have democracy now? How much do they vote for their own government?

Some of the protestors are using the "hands up" gesture from Ferguson, Missouri. Isn't that cool?

From my understanding, Beijing is trying to impose which candidates can or can't run in the upcoming elections there. So this isn't full democracy.

They don't realize that it will only be a matter of time before the conquerors from China march troops in and silence the opposition.

Best change right now is to gtfo while you can.

I've visited HK many times for business, before 1997 and after. The place has changed, even from a foreigners view.
The Communist Chinese government is trying to turn the place into another "China", which is angering the locals.

I've visited many cities in China also, and the differences between HK and China was very significant.
Hong Kong is like New York City (Manhattan), while most parts of China resemble a 3rd world country that is developing.

I have been to China several times but never to Hong Kong.

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

The Chinese leadership wants the benefits of the economic strength of Hong Kong while enforcing more political control. That does not sound very workable and will likely cause further problems.

I don't think China will change their mind. But at least now they are getting international attention. The Chief Executive of Hong Kong now is leaning heavily towards chinese government. People just don't feel like he is working for Hong Kong people anymore.

I can see if I never taste democracy, I probably think they are protesting something non-sense. "Hey, at least you get choices even though somebody pick them out for ya". But then, once you live under democracy, can you go back? Now, protest is legal, they can come out and yell at Chief Exe whenever they want. But if they don't fight for this, democracy will be lost a little at a time.
