US society has never been one that has taught citizens to shy away from government authority. You may be thinking of Andy of Mayberry, which was a television program.

No one said it was okay for a kid to be mouthy but being mouthy is not against the law, however slamming someone for being mouthy is..

Yes we are evolving into that type of society.

Not only mouthing off but beating up adults as well.

Yes, although to their credit, when he pulled his gun they clearly went over to defuse that VERY quickly. I can just imagine the thoughts going through their heads: "Holy carp, Commander Rambo here is going to have us on the front pages just like all those other stories the last several months!"

As it is, they are all over media, but A) they're not the ones directly looking horrible (although right now the national chatter is looking down at McKinney as a whole*), and 2) it could have been far FAR worse if Officer EgoTrip and his itchy trigger finger had gone off on one of those two teens.

*- Which is another item. You just know McKinney is being viewed as Another Racist Texas Town right now, which makes every single resident there look bad. All of which could've been avoided if that one cop had just shown the level of decorum apparently shown by every other officer on the scene that was breaking up a rowdy pool party. Seriously, this was not a Life and Death Situation** or anything close to it.

**- Speaking of "Life or Death Situations", as others have noted, this is being contrasted with pictures from the scene in Waco a short time ago, where two biker gangs HAD A LITERAL SHOOTOUT IN A RESTAURANT AND PARKING LOT, WITH FATALITIES. Obviously we didn't see everything the police were doing in that prior incident, but it makes for troubling visuals, to put it mildly.

12 officers responded to that incident. One went Rambo and it's being dealt with by the police department.

Not like his bosses ignored it and let him continue to patrol.

waldo you seemed to missed the posters point.

The issue is do we as a society wish to have grown men react with violence just because someone is rude or mouthy?

You seem to think it is OK for cops to rough handle people when they want to. I do not and the majority of this country do not. Video is forcing change and exposing the hypocrisy of our police forces. They insist we follow every command to the letter and do it instantly, yet the police play fast and loose with the rules and guidelines they are supposed to follow to the letter.

Policing has shifted from protecting the public to dominating the public and using maximum force to get compliance rather than taking the time and effort to resolve situations like the one shown.

These are kids , they are not trained how to deal with aggressive officers nor how to deal with scary situations. The cops are trained, and they are trained not to act like that loose cannon cop.

Keep in mind if her parent did that, CPS would be called.. If that was an animal, Animal control would be called, the police would be called and the aggressor would be under arrest..

How can you honestly think it is right for someone to be slammed on the ground for being mouthy?
The girl wasn't slammed on the ground because she was being mouthy. She was forcibly placed on her stomach and had to be controlled before handcuffs were put on because she wouldn't obey an order to voluntarily turn on her stomach so that handcuffs could be placed on. Likewise, the officer's knee was placed on the girl's back because she wouldn't remain turned over and continued to resist. Now, as I stated in my earlier post, its not clear to me whether the girl should even have been arrested, but stay on topic and report what is actually shown.

It is the video tape that has exposed his behavior that is driving this issue, not the Police department. They are simply reacting and trying to minimize the PR nightmare this guy created.

Before video , and before the law stopped cops from grabbing cameras (they still do but now with real time streaming they have to be careful), the cops would just call that girl a lair, claim she struck the cop or threatened the cops in someway....

Now they know that the video may expose their lies so they have to be more careful. Soon the cops will have no choice but to stop using violence as a solution to non violent situations and stop using violence to force non violent people to quickly comply with their over the top demands.

violent cops, just make more people afraid of them and more people resort to desperate means to avoid the cops completely. Just as violent parents leads to more violent kids.
