When Covid hit Belgium, the zoos were shut down. The orangutans, who were used to being the stars at the zoo and getting a lot of attention from the human visitors, didn't get the attention anymore and became very depressed. They lost their appetites, became aggressive and spent most of the day hiding in their cave. They were dying of loneliness.
The zookeepers tried to keep them company, but that didn't help. Then one zookeeper had an idea. He would build an artificial river into the orangutans' cage and connected it to the most mischievous animals in the zoo - the river otters. No one knew how they would react when they met each other, but it turned out to better than anyone expected.
Per article, surfers report a shark attacked its mom, so it seems the lonely pup get its companionship fix by joining the surfers. First learned of this today, made me smile.
