I think the kid needs to perform community service and anger management courses using the fines he is required to pay and he needs to apologize to the victim. Jail is not the solution.
I'd generally agree except for the violent, unprovoked attack on a vulnerable target.
Your way just lets him cycle his way back out in public until some lady ticks him off at the 7-11 and he decides to put a hammer to her skull....or kicks his land lady to death.....
With this level of violent behavior, he needs to go to jail for public safety.
