Whats wrong? Despair, hopelessness, mental issues, drugs, etc etc. The list goes on. In this case its probably anger and revenge as well.
Divorce does bad things to peoples heads. Our society builds marriage up as this perfect thing that lasts forever. Then reality comes along and people learn....its not that way at all.

30% (the 50% is a oft quoted but incorrect number) of marriages fail completely. Of those currently married 40% are unhappy in their marriage, and willing to state so.
So while not everyones reality, its a depressingly high number. And growing up we're told over and over how perfect relationships are.
So when they fail (as many do), people just lose it. anger, revenge, other dark thoughts. And thats how stuff like this occurs. its not sane, or reasoned. its our stupid brains and negative emotions.
Reportedly there are about 1200-1500 family murder- suicides each year in the US. Most involve marital disputes and women are usually the victims, direct and indirect ( via children) targets.

Not to mention that stories like this one are hardly unique to the modern area. Medea, any one? Granted, the role of the two sexes are reversed in that story, but it goes to show that even the ancient Greeks were familiar with the emotional dynamic which fuels these sort of tragedies.
