A primary school principal has apologised after a student was crowned 'best dressed' wearing a Hitler costume.
The school, St Philip's College in Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, was reportedly hosting students from a Melbourne Jewish school at the time.
As part of the nationwide annual school event children are encouraged to dress up as their favourite character for a parade or assembly, in celebration of children's literature.
Durp... I'm a bit puzzled with how the school would even allow it considering children's literature and Nazis don't go together, and I really have to question parent(s) that think a Nazi outfit is the way to go for this event.
That's a very difficult question. Regardless our will WWII becomes an event of the past. This war hasn't the same strong emotional reaction now as it was in 1950s or 1960s. So Hitler isn't the absolute evil nowadays for many people but like a monster from a movie or computer game. These are the causes and explanations of boy's act. We shouldn't judge him very strongly.
But the boys and girls have to study history well at school. They must know about human losses of 60 million, Buchenwald and Auschwitz. Someone maybe interested in structure and design of Panther and Sturm-tiger but he must comprehend Hitler was the absolute evil.

Basically, there's stupidity everywhere, and apparently, plenty are sprouting up in the Northern Territory.

When does one learn about such things? How does one learn?
Growing up in the 60's, watching Hogan's Heroes, I was unknowing of how terrible the 3rd Reich was, took WWII as just another war like that of Viet Nam or the Civil.
Further, even a serious movie like "Twelve O'Clock High" does absolutely nothing to tell the viewer of how terrible the German rulers were.
The list may be endless of movies that don't tell: Tobruk, Mosquito Squadron, Raid on Rommel, and so forth. Even movies that do touch on such as in Morituri, 633 Squadron, The Last Escape, Operation Crossbow may not tell enough if one does not really know to recognize it. Especially when those movies can be countered with the good guys doing similar things such as in The Dirty Dozen.
So when, at what age, does one start learning how really terrible they were?

Wow, you have to be kidding. Or not. See, there are these things called "books", especially "history" books, that you can "read" and which will provide you with knowledge of the world and its' past, including major wars and the resulting horrors. Not everyone relies on television or movies for the totality of their knowledge.

Nevertheless, when does one start reading such books? How many children these days read?
Further, when does one start to understand the horrors of such events, that they were really bad things?
In 7th and 8th grade, one of my "favorite" books in the library was an Amnesty International report on torture in Greece. Given a constant stream of Roger Corman flicks on TV and a certain encouragement to be blood thirsty, I could not appreciate that what I was readying was bad.
When does one start to learn about such things and when does one start to learn that they are indeed horrors?

Well, I was reading Dostoyevsky in 5th grade, although the librarian was horrified. Actually, I imagine children read complex subject matter even earlier these days. I would hope that their parents or teachers would explain to them the nature and gravity of war, torture, mass exterminations, and other atrocities if they read about them either hardcover or online. BTW, not everyone compares real life to the movies. Very few people except Holocaust deniers or white supremacists would think that what Hitler perpetrated was anything but ghastly, even with the modern abundance of gore-drenched splatter porn films.
Yeah its not ok to joke about 9/11 but its totally ok to joke about Hitler
