Thought I'd share a positive news story. This 10-month-old baby was born with four legs and two spines. The legs were protruding from her neck. She underwent a successful surgery in Chicago earlier this month and doctors expect she will be able to lead a normal life.

It's really amazing how far medicine has come and I hope we are only at the beginning.

Yes, it used to be called something. A ------- twin. I can't recall the term now.

People like that used to be in freak shows.

The term you're thinking of is conjoined twin.

This case was a "parasitic" twin. In "conjoined" both twins are alive. This one was not. Google it for some very strange cases....one guy had a parasitic twin in his belly so for all his life he looked like he was pregnant.

So glad this case turned out well! It truly IS amazing what medicine can do now...

Oh, it was very much alive - just not a complete body. A parasitic twin is a subset of the larger set of conjoined twins; in both cases, the problem results from an either an incomplete division of a developing embryo, or two separate early embryos fusing together.

If you really want to gross yourself out, Google "fetus in fetu" and "teratoma." When developmental biology goes wrong, sometimes it goes horror-movie wrong!

I'm glad the kid in this case was able to be successfully separated from the redundant set of legs and spine. Sometimes the connections between the different body parts makes it impossible to remove them.

For the curious, Wikipedia offers a pretty good overview of conjoined and parasitic twins:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conjoined_twins

And here's a famous set of conjoined twins that couldn't be separated because they don't have two separate and complete bodies (although they are clearly two separate persons):
