“General Motors believes the future is all-electric,” says Mark Reuss, the company’s head of product. “We are far along in our plan to lead the way to that future world.”
I think that someone at GM is in for a rude awakening, that was a stupid thing to say in public.
I can safely say that the internal combustion engine, will be around for a really long time to come. It cannot be easily replaced, which should be self-evident.
By one report, GM loses $9,000 on each Chevy Bolt it sells That doesn't make for a solid business plan, in anyone's book. How are they going to change that?
Long term focus. More of the world is mandating no internal combustion / fossil fuels. They are a global company..
This should actually be welcome news for American jobs. We need to compete globally, and export the crap out of cars. It's always good business to think about overseas OPM

You and me and our pocket books. Remember, it's capitalism and taxes for common people and corporate welfare for the big boys.
I can hardly wait to see the size of the electric motor that can move a 18 wheeler with 40 ,000 kilos of cargo in it. Not going to happen. No body seems to think about the drawbacks to the wonderful idea of electric vehicles.
I can believe they might move away from diesel in personal cars pretty soon. Already Britain has a deadline for selling diesel cars in that country. I forget when it is, but it's pretty soon. So it's economics, not green-thinking at GM that is forcing the decision.

xxx.
Oh, the electric motor isn't the problem. All big locomotives, whether diesel or electric use electric motors at the axle end (the diesel only drives a generator to power the electric motor). The largest mining trucks are electric. Even the largest ships use electric motors.
The real issue with electric cars is energy storage. Battery technology just isn't there yet. Actually what I envision would be a small turbine driving a genset that would charge the battery when needed. That would be the most thermally efficient set up I can think off with current technology because the genset could be designed to only kick in when needed and operate at it's optimum efficiency with the battery taking the surge loads.
