The only way this makes any even the smallest amount of sense is if they kept the animal caged outdoors and didn't pay much attention to it. Although there are some physical similarities between Tibetan Mastiffs and bears, there's no way a bear was living among them as a pet until one day they just happened to notice it wasn't acting all doglike. And who feeds their dog baskets of fruit? No one, that's who. A dog wouldn't even survive on a diet of fruit and noodles.
She probably knew exactly what she bought and lied about it to escape legal consequences.

It makes some sense if you know what that particular breed looks like.They're sort of bear-like, although by two years it's probably more denial than anything else.
Nope. Bear=/=dog. No way a person could not tell the difference unless they were deaf and blind and a little slow. They bought a bear cub then it got out of control and could no longer care for it.
China is rather recently having a love affair with dog ownership. In 2014, only 7% of Chinese owned a dog. Much less than ownership in Europe, and much much much less than dog ownership in the U.S.
While things are changing, the Chinese are more used to eating dogs than keeping one as a pet. I can understand how someone who is FINALLY affluent ENOUGH to own a pet, might be bamboozled into thinking they bought a mastiff puppy, when in fact, they bought a bear.
If you live in some remote province in China, and you THINK you're getting a good deal on buying a puppy...I don't know...I can see it happening.
