Todt Hill is an upscale, quiet neighborhood. Nicest on SI. Some nice, large houses, lots of trees. Things like this just don't happen there. Imagine hearing 6+ shots in an area like that? Disrespectful for that reason, and because it was at his house with his family right inside.
I've seen people on the internet wondering if this is somehow connected to the recent $70M+ coke bust at the Port of Newark. Would be interesting if it somehow was.
The mob is definitely alive and well, anyone in the area knows it. There are still busts where like 50+ people are arrested in NY and NJ, there was one rather recently.
The Cosa Nostra has been a shadow of it's former self for several decades now which I am guessing is why you don't hear much about Mafia gang violence anymore. Most former members are in jail, dead, or took over more profitable pursuits. Russian and other ethnic organized crime groups, motorcycle clubs, and street gangs have long taken over there business.
He probably got whacked by some local teenage gang banger, and there's not a thing they can do about it.
They are not as big as they were decades ago, sure, but they still have some 'weight' in the area, loan-sharking, drugs, mostly. I have a relative that married into that.

There was also one several years back on my block in the Bronx and it wasn’t he first in recent memory. In fact, my previous next door neighbor was brother to the head of the Bonnano crime family.
That just the kind of response that makes us think you might have something to do with this.....
SS
haha. It's funny the mob existed for decades and even J. Edgar Hoover denied they existed. Now they make movies and TV shows about them.
But no seriously, drugs and the RICO act pretty much destroyed them. They are still around in certain niche areas in NYC but they just aren't the power players they once were.
Hopefully this won't lead to some kind of mob war in NYC.
Live by the sword, die by the sword.
