A Russian who tried to smuggle a two-year-old orangutan onto a plane so he could bring him home as a pet has been arrested in Bali.

How exactly does one smuggle a two-year old orangutan onto an airplane? Wrap a bonnet around his head and tell the flight attendants it's a hairy child? Who would call him on that without fear of being sued?

It's nice to know that Russia has it's share of lunatics.

With the right piece of carry-on luggage, you could do it.

Russians are into keeping all manner of pets. It's a little weird, but animals categorized as wild animals, definitely not pet material, are kept as pets, and somehow it works. Bears are popular, of course, and have become more popular, as a result of winter hunting on bears being permitted: shooting the adults in their dens, leaving the little ones orphaned. There are bear cub orphanages. But they keep other weird pets, too.

Apparently the lynx is cool with it.

Why on earth you would want an Orangutan as a pet is a mystery to me. They're 10 times as strong as a human and can be dangerous. Something isn't right here. It may have been going to a zoo.

He overdosed it on allergy meds to make it sleep, then put it into a basket inside his suitcase. 2 year old orangutans are still pretty small. He still looks like a little baby in the photos. They age more like humans than other non-primate animals, which are pretty much full grown at 2.

Really (the luggage)? Would the orangutan not give itself away by "voicing his opinion" about being stuffed into a duffle bag? But the owner probably gave him knockout drugs. Interesting, those Russians.

I suppose there are people in the world who think it strange that we Americans keep guinea pigs, hamsters and gerbils as pets. Maybe the cats and dogs as well.

No one who works for a zoo would squish an animal into a basket into a suitcase, let alone drug it with OTC meds and try to smuggle it. I'm sure a zoo could get one legally.

It's not just about whether it's strange, it is illegal to have endangered animals as pets.
