Another issue with squatters that became deadly for the homeowner. Something has to be done to better protect the home owners from squatters.

Apparently the apartment thieves knew her mom was taken to the hospital. These criminal squatters are apparently looking for any unoccupied property at this point. They probably don't even know how squatters rights work but they'll just claim if caught.

Also on the news this morning the murder suspects were caught in Pennsylvania

Always make your home, apartment etc seem occupied with a light on or on a timer. Leave a radio or tv on low just loud enough so when they get near or break in they'll think someone is there and abandon their plans.

I'm sure that the people who passed these laws giving squatters so many rights will pass even more laws to protect home owners. what ever would we do without these people protecting us.

I just think of the stuff that is required to legally sell a house like an inspection , title search, proof of funds, credit checks, deposits etc all of which has to be documented yet a squatter can say they were there. A house can legally be sold in a month yet it can take 6 months to two years to evict a squatter with no documentation or proof they completed presale requirements.

And I still see people announcing on social media that they are 'going on a trip to Ireland (many happy faces and exclamation points) for a month' or 'taking the grandkids to see Disneyland -- back in 2 weeks (more exclamation points and smily faces) etc.

Its like an invitation to thieves and squatters

This is not a squatting incident. Squatting is when a person or persons occupy a property for a period of time and claim that they have a legal claim to the property, generally through a lease, deed, inheritance, or life estate. They fight for their claim and refuse to move out of the property.

We do not know how long these people were in this property. They made no claims of ownership or tenancy and produced no paperwork, and they ran out on their own.

Apparently what we have here is a burglary gone wrong, resulting in a murder. Squatting is in style now so it sounds a lot better for the uninformed media to call it a squatting incident.

Actually, there are probably many definitions of squatting. In my city, it is a pretty broad notion: when someone takes up residence on a residential, commercial, or rental property without the legal consent of the property owners. It is a criminal offense. I watched police evict two men who occupied a house that had been vacant for years. They made no claims on the property, just "claimed" that it wasn't hurting anyone for them to be in an otherwise empty house. The owner and police disagreed.
