Hi all, so I checked the weather and its supposed to rain the next 10 days! I've been commuting since March, but always drive if its too cold or rainy. Starting this week I'd like to try riding in the rain. It will be in the 70's, so nice and warm. But cloudy, light right, to occasional pours. My commute is 7 miles if I go directly to work. Im going to leave dry clothes at work to change into. Do you guys commute/ride in the rain/bad weather? What do you wear or any tips for me? My jersey and shorts are black, if I could go back in time I'd have probably bought a bright orange jersey. I don't know any other cyclists. Im in Lawrence, ks.
I'm too lazy to do that deliberately anymore. Sometimes I get caught in the rain tho. I always have a change of clothes at work. The summers here I get almost as wet when it aint raining.
Make sure you have either fenders or some mud guards installed so you don't have a big wet line of dirty water doing down the middle of your back. You should use your lights too if you've got them. If not, get some lights. Get a waterproof backpack for your stuff.
I ride in most weather conditions, down into the low 20's. I find riding in the rain exhilarating. But, it can get old if done often enough.
Anywhoo, coolhand gave some good advice - fenders, mudguard on the edge of the fenders (especially the rear), keep your lights on, waterproof panniers, get a cycling specific rain cape, learn how to use your brakes in the rain(use both front and rear as opposed to mainly front in dry conditions), dry off your bike and chain, and re-lube more often.
Worst thing for me about the rain is getting my shoes wet. I hate that. You can remove the liner for faster drying.
Basically, it's just the weather. Our bodies were made for it. And the best reason to ride in the rain is of course rule #9.
Have a blast
