My father's (>80 years old) lab test showed kidney failure. He has the following values:

BUN=23
Creatonin=1.7

I just wonder how dngerous it is... Is it a subject for dialysis?

Probably not. Those values aren't that high. Should be watched but since he's had blood work, I'm assuming he's seeing a dr.

I got my lab results today my BUN was 21, and the Creatinine was 1.0. The labs were done for my Endocrinlogist. Since I saw him for Diabetes, he made no mention about the BUN being a little high. I'm not sure why he didn't bring it up. My guess is he didn't think it was a concern just yet, or its up to the Primary to deal with it. I notice specialist can be funny on what conditions can or do impact their specialty. As far as I know Kdneys are impacted by Diabetes.

Looking at my recent labs BUN came in at 22 and range is 12-28

Creatinine came in at .66

I'd like to bring that down some and reading a lot of info, says reduce Protein. I eat my protein and work on less carbs intake. ummm

I bought a kidney bladder herbal and started taking it today.

Normal ranges for BUN will tend to vary some depending on lab doing work but typical range is 7-20 but I have seen ranges up to 22

(Have NEVER seen a BUN range from 12-28)

You are correct that diabetes affects the kidneys. Of the 2 tests you had the creatinine is the more sensitive and specific. Talk to your endocrinologist or PCP but a value of 21 on a BUN is really just high side of normal...

Yeah that's still wrong....

BUN/Creatinine RATIO is reported as a RATIO as in 10:1, 12:1, 15:1 etc

So you can't have a normal range of 12-28

The lab my MD uses has a range of 12-28 for the Ratio of both.

There is Bun Range
There is Creatinine Range
There is Range for both these

"The ratio of BUN to creatinine is usually between 10:1 and 20:1."

It's been said many times, different labs use different ranges. I'm looking at mine and I have good eyes. And what is down on their reports, obviously differs.

Something tells me no one is wrong in their info and I'm JUST a patient reading her labs. I don't work in the medical world nor am I a scientist.

To me these ratios tell me nothing. The 10:1 and 20:1.

All our levels have to change with age, my kidneys, bladder and every other organ are 79 yrs old.
