Well y'all are just gonna love this:

I was at Whole Foods Lakewood and struck up a conversation with two rather hip-looking bohos and they asked me where I live - I told them Junius Heights and they said, "oh you mean 'Genius' Heights"!

That's cool. Didn't know it had that reputation. What kind of geniuses live there? Writers? Scientists? Professors? Inventors?

I would be very careful about Junius Heights.

EDITED: I posted a rant, and then deleted it. In the interest of maintaining a collegial atmosphere on the board, I will just say that there are those of us who rented in Junius Heights, coming in from out of state, and do not feel positively at all about the neighborhood. It depends on what you're looking for and what you care about. I would give a lot of weight to the term "transitional."

Junius Heights has over 800 homes and covers quite a bit of area. It is transitional in some sections but that's what makes it a good buy for the future. It's one of the few places you can find a home for less than $200K in the Lakewood area. I think most of us who post about it usually caution that this will mean that some work will need to be done. The homes off Gaston on the 'side streets' such as Newell, Glasgow, Lowell, etc are about twice as much and the closer you get to the Lakewood Library the safer/nicer it is (generally speaking). You have new townhomes to the south and an estate area to the east. On the north side you have Swiss Avenue (and Gaston, which is admittedly spotty) and to the west you have Munger Place, a mostly restored area of two-story prairie foursquares that can range around 1/2 million dollars. Columbia to the south is really the only area that I would caution others about - Beacon brings up some traffic from the 'not as nice' area to the south. Personally I like going to Supermercado and La Popular on Columbia - I think they are great assets.

The homes are all 100 years old or getting there so there is going to be a wide variation on conditions of each home.

Now open: The Lab at Lakewood | Advocate Magazine in Junius Heights

"This summer, The Lab will feature what Melissa calls all sorts of good, “nerdy chemistry stuff.” Every week will have a new theme, every day a new program … like fingerprinting detective work, aromatherapy/taste exploration and an art-meets-science program.

The grand opening is set for June 5 from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. with lots of hands-on activities, snacks and family-friendly fun for everyone.

The Lab at Lakewood is a fun alternative for birthday parties and school trips, where the focus is on a multi-sensory approach that makes learning about science fun."
