we bought some "deep shade" grass seed from local Home Depot and it has worked very well. Don't know the manufacturer's name. Only problem is it will stay green (but not really grow) during winter.

Have you had it long? Any grass like that we've planted has died out in our summer heat.

St Augustine is the grass usually used in shady areas where Bermuda won't/can't grow--but having two grass species in your yard is receipe for disaster IMO--cause we had that in our Bedford lawn--
you can't use the same type of weed killer for both strands of grass--so you could wind up killing one with the wrong treatment

most of the time people would recommend using another type of ground cover--maybe an Asian Jasmine ground vine--or bed with shade plants like caladiums--or thinning the tree canopy if that is what is bringing such strong shade to prevent the grass growing

we were at dinner the other night at house in FTW and they have a zoysia grass in their backyard where we ate--
very soft, green, thin-bladed--georgeous--
and they have a good bit of shade in their yard eventhough it faces south--
had bermuda taken out and replaced with this several years ago and never regretted it
but that is expensive proposition--and don't know they did it with the front/side yards--did not pay attention there

Yes, St Augustine tolerates shade better than Bermuda...but I believe it has to be established St Augustine. What I mean is, if you planted St Augustine years ago when you had no shade, and now you trees have grown and you have nice shady areas...chances are your St AUgustine will still be there (mostly). But I don't think you can plant NEW St Augustine in an already shady spot and expect it to flourish.

about 3 years.

direct sunlight it will die.

Full shade to partial shade it does well. Of course, any grass needs some sunlight, but in the areas we have put it, Saint Augustine won't do well and this stuff works.

I lightly scraped the soil, put out seed, cover with 1/4 inch of peat moss, water twice a day for first week & once a day for next week. It appeared 7 days later. In 14 days, it shows thicker as more seeds sprout.

The deep shade doesn't seem to spread, but you can always cover any bare spots with more seed.

Try TifGrand, a new hybrid bermudagrass extensively evaluated to thrive in 60-70% shade as well as full sun. More info is available at TifGrand - Bermudagrass for shade. There are several licensed growers in TX and there's a list on that website.

St Augustine still has to have a good bit of sun to survive. It can also be killed off if snow/ice sits on it for a few days.

Fescue is one grass that will grow in the shade and will stay green all year round. It can handle as little as an hour of sun a day.

Typically, St Augustine will choke out Bermuda and overtake any Bermuda. If you plant St Augustine and your neighbors do not want it overtaking their Bermuda then you need to put down a barrier between the yards. Otherwise you might get some neighbors ticked off at you
