So I have a few friends coming down from San Jose during the July 4th weekend. Which are the places that I should take them to so that they go back impressed with what Texas has to offer? I am also open to a 4-5 hr road trip around Dallas.

Also I was wondering if there are any cooler places (weather-wise) nearby in case they think the Texas summer is too hot for them?

Depends on what impresses them. If it's mountains and beaches, then you're out of luck. But Dallas has lots of beautiful neighborhoods and some very impressive architecture. If they're into that, then definitely show them the Arts District in Downtown Dallas The Dallas Arts District. Fair Park Fair Park has the largest collection of Art Deco Exposition buildings in the world and a few interesting museums. Beautiful 'hoods to check out are Highland Park, Turtle Creek Blvd., Lakewood, Bluffview, Kessler Park. Of course, Dallas has awesome shopping (Highland Park Village Highland Park Village | The Premier Shopping Experience of Dallas, Texas & Northpark Center NorthPark Center - The Premier Shopping and Dining Center in Dallas are the best, IMO). We have no shortage of great restaurants too. Maybe they'd like the view from Wolfgang Puck's 560 restaurant at the top of Reunion Tower Five Sixty by Wolfgang Puck Dallas :: Asian Restaurant.

For the morning of the 4th, checkout the Lakewood parade. It is a good old-fashioned and definitely "Dallas" event.

Have them come back in October and drive down to San Antonio. Otherwise, stay indoors a lot and go to the IMAX. There's a few fireworks displays you may enjoy..... Take them on a Segway tour of Fort Worth or Dallas during the cooler part of the day.

Maybe dinner at Mesa and a show at Texas Theater on Jefferson in Oak Cliff.

See if the Fairmont will have their Fri night movie at the pool - open to public.

Belmont Hotel has public pool hours on Sunday 1-5pm.

Dinosaur Valley State Park is a good day trip in Glen Rose - bring swim gear. Combine that with Big Rock Park in the town of Glen Rose along the river (the river is nicer here). You could have a nice lunch or dinner at Rough Creek Lodge.

I love Glen Rose, Big Rock State park is awesome and there's a pie shop on the square that is fantastic.
