I have a nonverbal 4 year old with global developmental delay/disability and we are thinking of moving to the Las Colinas area and were trying to decide between apts that fall within Irving, CFB or Coppell ISDs (we need to be in an area close to a DART station and preferably diverse, and Las Colinas fits the bill).

I would like to hear from someone with first hand info reg. CFB ISD for special education services if possible. I have heard good things about Irving ISD special ed on this forum, and was looking to hear about the other options.

Bookworm2768, I found some posts by you reg. special ed services in CFB ISD, but I was not able to DM you, and hence this post.

I would be grateful for any info that you or anyone may have.

Thanks for reading!

Hello, I lived in Irving with my very delayed daughter who was 4 at the time. I would not recommend Irving and everyone I spoke to from Coppell had to get lawyers to get the services they needed. We eventually moved to Plano and it was much much better our daughter got speech therapy 4 times per week and 5 times more PT and OT than in Irving. Please PM me if I can be of help

My twin daughters currently attend Riverchase Elementary and are in 1st grade. We moved from NYC in the middle of the school year. My girls were preemies and had some delays - and had been receiving services from Early Intervention and then from the NYC Board of Ed beginning at 3 years old. They had been in full-time school just before their 3rd birthday - where one received PT and OT services and one received heavy Speech and some OT services in school. Their birthday was late in the year - December - but in NYC they were eligible for full time Kindergarten - and had completed half the year when we moved in February 2014. I had reached out to ever ISD in North Texas. The only one that actually listened to me - and was willing to let them continue in Kindergarten (given their birthdays) was CFB-ISD. The Director of Special Education listened to me and the girls history - and she agreed it would be detrimental to put the kids back into half day pre-K when they had been doing so well in Full Time Integrated Kindergarten in NY. She agreed to let them start in PPCD Kinder - given availability they had to be bussed to Sheffield Elementary in Dallas (There was a closer PPCD Kinder at La Villita that was full). After they completed the ARD and evaluations - they deemed that one twin should be dismissed (I think she would have benefited from some more OT but was overall ok with the decision) - and that Riley was still eligible for speech. They did not need PPCD - so then they were no longer eligible for the bus. So my poor resilient girls did attend 3 different schools for Kindergarten - but they finished up the year well at Riverchase. And after that all teachers agreed that they should not be kept back to repeat Kinder just due to their age - they must be promoted to First Grade or they'd be bored. Well this year they are doing very well. Riley still gets speech for articulation which she needs. And both girls made A Honor Roll. If the wonderful director of CFB-ISD hadn't been willing to listen to me, the girls would have still been in Kindergarten and I would have strangled my husband for moving us here. So honestly I have been happy with the Special Ed Services of CFB-ISD. They were the only district that really listened to me about my girls and for that I am grateful. I would call over to Marie Huie and explain your situation. As long as you live in the district they will provide bus services to and from school if your child requires services that the zoned school doesn't provide. Good luck..
