I'm moving to Dallas in the next few months, and I've been having trouble deciding where to live. I'll be working in Addison, and don't mind a commute. I'm 24 and single, and I'd prefer to live in an active area.

From what I've found, the closer to downtown, the higher the prices are for rent (especially in Uptown).

Is it worth the extra $200 a month to live in Uptown rather than in Addison?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated because I'm scheduled to go down to look at potential apartments in the end of Oct.

Also, is there any way to find an apartment that is not part of a complex? I prefer that sort of apartment over the large complexes, but I haven't had any luck finding one.

I live in the Addison area, and there's plenty of fun things to do here, restaurants, shopping, etc. I really can't say anything about the downtown or uptown areas since I don't go there often... I guess it depends on what you like to do for fun.
But I think Addison is a nice place to be for young single people.
I'm an old (27!) married lady with a kid, so I'm not really part of that scene, but if I were, I don't think I'd feel like I was "missing out" on anything by living in Addison instead of downtown or uptown. It's a very easy drive to those places on the weekends- easier than your daily commute would probrably be.

Basically there are more things to do closer in the city around Uptown and Downtown. But its hard to say whether or not its worth the extra money. Have you had a chance to visit these areas in person?

No, I haven't had a chance to visit yet. I'm flying down for a few days next week, so I should hopefully get a better idea by then.

I think you would have a better chance of making friends in the Knox/Henderson (Henderson side), Lower Greenville, Uptown or Downtown areas. Addison has a lot of traveling salesmen/corporate nomads/expense account types.

Uptown is a bit more haughty, but you could get up the tollway pretty fast to work..

ah, the age-old dilemma. Basically this boils down to:

Are you a bar guy? ->Pick Addison

Are you a lounge guy? ->Pick Uptown

Are you a club guy? ->Pick Downtown

Downtown and uptown have a lot of fresh college kiddies. If you want a younger crowd, this is all you. Addison is a bit older (25 - 29), but I really think you'd grow tired of uptown by 26-27. Though what the dude said about the corporate types is totally true.

So, I'm looking around the Uptown/Lower Greenville area, and I'm really into the 50's style remodeled apartments. Is that a pretty common thing in that area?

It's absolutely worth the extra money to live closer into the city.

In my opinion, Addison should be renamed Cheesyville. Get on your polo, khakis, put a bluetooth headset in your ear, and a phone holster on your belt. Welcome to the movie Office Space -- in real life.

Oh yes. Check out Power Properties - apartment dallas rental uptown, apartment locator dallas, downtown dallas apartment also there's an area bounded by Greenville Ave, Lover's Lane, Skillman, DART/Katy Trail Extension with E. University running through -- great for that..

I left out Lakewood because it's a bit further to work but if you are more the bohemian intellectual type who's very friendly, it would work. More of a mixed-age crowd here. Check out
Lakewood Landing and Tipperary Inn Irish Pub & Restaurant Dallas TX for instance -- they are a big block east of Lower Greenville Ave.

I live just south of Addison (if I threw a rock hard it would land in Addison); I'm renting a townhouse and it's very nice and quiet.

Traffic in Addison can be brutal so a commute to work inside Addison itself will be much easier than from Uptown. Addison is popular with the 'young people'; restaurant row is pretty cool, plus there's good shopping and entertainment venues. Dallas's entertainment districts are a short drive away and on the weekends you won't have to put up with icky rush hour traffic. I'd add Addison to the list, and the area immediately south of it. Addison itself is very small; hardly anyone actually lives IN Addison itself.
